Could Virginia Tech lock up Bud Foster before Clemson calls?

Posted November 19, 2008

Clemson's coaching search seemingly takes a new twist every day - some of them out of Terry Don Phillips and Dabo Swinney's control. The latest? Virginia Tech is looking into a deal to make Bud Foster (who has interviewed for the Tigers' head coaching opening) head coach-in-waiting, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Of course, Texas did the same thing Monday, pushing defensive coordinator Will Muschamp's salary to $900 K per year to wait behind Mack Brown, 57. That crossed Muschamp off Clemson's wish list, but Tech's situation seems far more preliminary.

A couple of very interesting quotes on the matter: one from Frank Beamer, who at 62 isn't re"I think if Bud Foster would get offered the Clemson job," Weaver said, "Bud Foster would take the Clemson job."ady to retire quite yet.

"To me, it makes it a little bit of an awkward situation," he said, but added, "That's somebody else's decision here at Virginia Tech. That's not mine."

The decision is that of AD Jim Weaver, who told the T-D that Beamer is "certainly going to have a tremendous amount of impact" in deciding whether an arrangement would work at Tech.

And it still might not stop Clemson from hiring Foster if the Tigers feel he's their man.

"I think if Bud Foster would get offered the Clemson job," Weaver told the T-D, "Bud Foster would take the Clemson job."

Still, if you're Dabo Swinney, you've gotta be feeling pretty good about this. Swinney's only promise from Phillips is that he'll have a chance to talk about the job after the season. But with Muschamp dropping out and Foster's status perhaps in question, Swinney's position gets stronger with every Clemson win.

It'll be extremely hard to pass him over if the Tigers win against Virginia and South Carolina and go to a bowl game, and might be difficult if they finish 6-6 with a tough loss thrown in.

Of course, that could change at any time, given this search's fluid nature.
