You knew that raises were coming for Dabo Swinney and his staff.
Wednesday, they arrived, with Clemson announcing raises for Swinney and every member of his coaching staff.
Here's the story I just filed for IndependentMail.com....
Last fall, Dabo Swinney and his staff elevated Clemson on the football field.
Wednesday, university administration returned the favor by fattening their paychecks.
Clemson officials announced across-the-board raises for Swinney and his staff, who led the Tigers to a 9-5 record, the program’s first ACC Atlantic Division title and a Music City Bowl win over Kentucky.
Swinney received a raise from $800,000 to $1.75 million, based on a clause in his original contract which said he must be paid the average of all 12 league head coaches if he led the Tigers to the ACC title game. He also had a year added to his contract.
“We were pleased with the performance of the Clemson football program under Dabo Swinney this past season and feel the new salaries reflect these accomplishments, and give our program the opportunity to reach higher goals in the future,” Clemson athletic director Terry Don Phillips said in a statement. “We won the ACC Atlantic Division Championship for the first time, finished in the top 25 of the Associated Press Poll, and the program is in good shape in all other phases, most importantly, academics.”
Every assistant got a raise, led by defensive coordinator Kevin Steele and offensive coordinator Billy Napier.
Steele, who was pursued heavily by alma mater Tennessee for its defensive coordinator position, got a $200,000 raise from $375,000 to $575,000. He also got a two-year extension, for a total four-year contract. Napier will earn $275,000, a $75,000 raise. Co-defensive coordinator/secondary coach Charlie Harbison – who received interest from Florida for its defensive coordinator opening – got a $75,000 raise, boosting him to $325,000. Defensive tackles coach Dan Brooks got a $30,000 raise, bumping his salary to $210,000.
Tight ends/offensive tackles coach Danny Pearman, running backs coach/special teams coordinator Andre Powell, defensive ends coach Chris Rumph and receivers coach/recruiting coordinator Jeff Scott all got $20,000 raises. Pearman will make $210,000, Powell and Rumph $180,000, and Scott $130,000. Offensive line coach Brad Scott received a $15,000 raise for a $220,000 salary. Every assistant other than Steele received a two-year contract.
Phillips said the raises were crucial to keep Swinney’s staff together.
“During the offseason a number of our coaches were pursued by prominent programs in other conferences,” he said. “We feel it is important to have continuity within the staff. When Clemson won three straight ACC championships from 1986-88, we had the same coaching staff all three years. When Florida State was among the top programs in the nation in the 1990s, it had consistency within its staff.
“The overall compensation for our coaching staff is well within the upper tier in the ACC.”
