Mother who home schools will be chairman of state board of education

Does it bother you that a mother who home-schools is now head of the state board for public schools?

A woman who homeschools her four daughters has been elected head of the board that oversees public schools in South Carolina.

Kristin Maguire of Clemson was voted chairwoman-elect for the State Board of Education on Wednesday. She is scheduled to become chairwoman in 2009.

Ms. Maguire was previously named to the board by Republican Governor Mark Sanford.

The board’s nominating committee preferred Trip DuBard but he was voted down 9-7. Ms. Maguire was elected on a voice vote.

At least one former teacher spoke against Ms. Maguire’s election at the board’s meeting.

Am I the only one who thinks this is an insane move on the part of the "public" Board of Education? This lady has some beliefs that don't exactly jive.

First, she home-schools her four daughters (i.e doesn't believe the public schools are proper for her family). Second, she believes "intelligent design" should be taught in public schools (where I must stress again she doesn't send her kids). And thirdly, she doesn't agree with the state mandated curriculum.

So, besides being appointed by the Republican governor who is trying to appease the right-wing of his party, what qualifies her for this post?

Anyone? Anyone?

I agree totally! This is the WORST possible type of person to Chair or even sit on a board that has any governance over the state's education policies. IF everything you say is true! The last thing the state needs is to take evolution out of the curriculum, that would set us back decades!

S.C. is the cesspool of politics (among other things). Did you really expect anything different?

Who cares if she home schools her children. That shouldn't make a difference. I think she will make a difference!!!
