Schaefer back in the race for Senate seat in Georgia

Stephens County — State Sen. Nancy Schaefer has had another change of plans.

Schaefer, R-Turnerville, said in a press release issued Thursday mornings that he has decided to run for re-election as the District 50 representative in the Georgia Senate.

Schaefer previously had planned a run for Congress against Rep. Paul Broun, another Republican, and another challenger, Barry Fleming, for the 10th Congressional District seat representing northeast Georgia. But Schaefer backed out as the result of health concerns facing her husband, Bruce.

In her statement Thursday, however, she indicated that they have met with consultants and created a plan to balance his upcoming surgery with her decision to run for re-election to the state Senate.

Terry Rogers and Jim Butterworth, both from Habersham County, have announced they would run for the Republican nomination for Schaefer’s District 50 Seat. Qualifying for Georgia Senate seats, as well as some other elected positions for which the races are partisan, is to take place Monday through Friday.
