New member sworn in to Hart County Board of Education

STORY TOOLS

— The Hart County Board of Education has wasted no time in installing newly elected board member Angie McGee.

At a called meeting Thursday, the board officially swore McGee in as the District 5 representative on the school board.

Normally, McGee would have taken office in January after winning the school board seat in the general election Tuesday.

“We decided that as soon as whoever won the election to go ahead and appoint that person to serve out the remaining two months of the board member who passed away, so that District 5 would have representation,” said David Hicks, Hart County school superintendent.

This past summer, board member Gerald Herring died, leaving the District 5 seat vacant.

McGee defeated Diane Merritt in the election Tuesday by a vote of 1,161 to 682.

Merritt, a former teacher in Hart County, said she will support McGee but does plan to seek the post again in two years.
