Now, you Christmas shoppers could stand in line on the day after Thanksgiving waiting to battle one another for a deal on an iPod or a flat-screen TV. Or, you could buy something local, something hand-crafted and something with an actual story and person behind it.
This Friday and Saturday at the Anderson County Museum, the annual Mistletoe Market will once again offer one-of-a-kind arts and crafts to any and all looking for something a little different this holiday season.
“Mistletoe is geared toward those who want to spend $5 and those who want to spend $100,” said Beverly Childs, director of the Anderson County Museum. “We want people to come to an event with an artisan flair that they can’t get anywhere else.”
Potters, jewelry makers, book makers, foodies and more will bring their wares into the halls of the Anderson County Museum from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Thirty artists and vendors will offer everything from goat cheese and fudge to handcrafted wood lamps and handmade children’s dresses while showcasing their skills right before the shoppers’ eyes.
Childs said the Mistletoe Market has the opportunity to become a high-end arts and crafts fair that will bring people from all over the region. In order to do that, she hopes to add more activities to the event so that shoppers will have something to do or see in between their browsing of the artists’ stands.
“We want to put activities like the children’s seminars, pictures with Santa and readings in with the overall feel of the Market,” she said.
The museum will offer the opportunity for children to get their picture taken with Santa, but the parents need to bring their own camera for that. There will also be children’s seminars with children’s author Vonda Skelton at 9 and 10:45 a.m. on Saturday as well as readings with that author.
Put that with the great jewelry makers, unique crafters and an open museum gift shop, and Childs believes they will continue a great event for the community.
“Everything is free, the workshops are free, though you must sign up for them, and admission is free,” she said. “And the artists we have are so diverse, you can certainly find something for anyone in your life.”
