October is a great month for movies, especially on DVD. A lot of this past summers theatrical hits finally arrive on DVD, and we get some good old fashioned horror flicks to get us in the Halloween spirit. The first week of October brings us Adam Sandler’s latest comedic effort, M. Night Shyalaman’s newest thriller, and some fun horror flicks for those chilly fall evenings.
First up is Adam Sandler as an Israeli counter-terrorist turned New York hairdresser in “You Don’t Mess With The Zohan” (Sony Pictures, $24.99 SRP, available in PG-13 and Unrated versions). Fans of Mr. Sandler’s brand of humor will find this one to be right up their alley as he brings the laughter in his portrayal of the Zohan, a commando who fakes his death so that he can follow his dream to America and become a highly sought after hairdresser. But his old nemesis The Phantom (played with devilish glee by John Turturro) soon learns of the Zohan’s whereabouts and sets out to find him to settle some unfinished business. The DVD comes loaded with special features including deleted scenes, alternate takes, several behind the scenes features, and a featurette called “The Stunts Of The Zohan”.
M. Night Shyamalan is hit or miss with many fans. He followed his classic films “The Sixth Sense” and “Unbreakable” with several films that fell flat for some fans (“Signs,” “Lady In The Water”). Those hoping for his big comeback with “The Happening” (20th Century Fox, $22.98 SRP, R) might be a bit disappointed. Even a star studded cast (Mark Wahlberg, John Leguizamo) couldn’t save this one from bottom of the barrel writing and a ridiculous plot. I await the day Shyamalan returns to form, but “The Happening” just wasn’t happening for me. The DVD features include a gag reel, behind the scenes features, extended versions for a number of scenes, and Shyamalan himself introducing the movie.
“Feast” was one of those movies that made it fun to be a horror fan. Made with a love for the genre and filled with a great cast, it proved itself to be one of the best horror films of the new millennium. Well, the same crew (and most of the cast) that brought us the original are back to bring us “Feast 2: Sloppy Seconds” (Weinstein Company, $24.89 SRP, Unrated), and this one looks to be as much fun, if not more so, than the original. If you haven’t seen the original “Feast” do yourself a favor and find it. I know that fans of the first one are as excited for this sequel as I am. Special Features include commentary by the cast and crew, a making of featurette, and a filmmaker’s bio.
My cult pick of the week is an obvious choice, considering the month we’re in. Yes, it’s another release of John Carpenter’s classic “Halloween” (Starz/Anchor Bay, $45.99 SRP, R), this time in a 6-disc (you read that right — SIX discs!) set, complete with a collectable Michael Myers’ mask for you to wear. So think about it: you get the movie, 5 discs of special features, AND a mask to wear for the upcoming holiday. You can’t beat that.
Other notable releases for this month include special edition versions of Alfred Hitchcock’s classics “Rear Window,” “Vertigo” and “Psycho” (Universal Studios, $19.99 each, Unrated), Season 2 of “30 Rock” (Universal Studios, $34.99 SRP, Unrated), and “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving” ( Warner Home Video, $17.99 SRP, Unrated).
