Cut in money for state program could affect Toccoa street resurfacing plans

— A few Toccoa streets could be out of the resurfacing loop, if LARP funding gets lopped.

LARP is the Local Assistance Road Program through the Georgia Department of Transportation, and on Tuesday the transportation department voted to reduce funding in the program for the 2009 budget.

The city of Toccoa recently applied for LARP funding to resurface Doyle Street from Big A Road to Pond Street.

“We do not actually get a lot of LARP money here,” said Billy Morse, Toccoa city manager. “It is enough to pave about 1 mile of city streets. However, it is a good supplement to our city budget, so (the funding reduction) is going to hurt.”

According to press reports, the LARP program could be slashed by $28 million, though the Georgia General Assembly and Gov. Sonny Perdue must approve the cuts.

Morse said other funding options are available to Toccoa to pay for street repaving.

“The good news is we have SPLOST (special location options sales tax) V funds earmarked for road resurfacings, so over the next five years, we hope we will be in good shape,” Morse said.

No official notification of any funding cuts has come yet from transportation department officials, Morse said.
