OCONEE COUNTY A single-vehicle collision in Oconee County on Saturday morning claimed the life of a Westminster man, Richard Wesley Satterfield.
Around 9 a.m., Satterfield, 49, of 9876 Long Creek Highway, Westminster, was traveling west on U.S. 76 (Long Creek Highway), when the 1992 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck he was driving ran off the road onto the right shoulder of the highway, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Oconee County Coroner’s Office.
The vehicle collided with a utility pole, struck a culvert and overturned, according to Lance Cpl. Kathy Hiles of the South Carolina Highway Patrol. The collision occurred just outside the city limits of Westminster between Dewey Street and West Bennett Road, authorities said. The vehicle came to rest upright, according to a statement from the office of Oconee County Coroner Karl Addis.
Satterfield was wearing a seat belt, authorities said. He died at the scene of the accident as the result of neck and head trauma, according to the coroner’s office statement.
Satterfield was roughly one mile from his home at the time of the accident and may have visited a store Saturday morning, according to the statement.
