- As for the fellow with the really BIG rocking chairs in the back of his truck: Hearsay has been informed that the man with the right large rockers in the bed of his truck is bound to be Gerry Maddox of Hartwell, Ga. Mr. Maddox owns a company that makes Paul Bunyan Rockers, which are constructed of cedar, walnut, cherry and other assorted woods. “You wouldn’t believe the calls I get for them,” Mr. Maddox said. If you’d like to know more about these rockin’ rockers, call Gerry at (706) 376-1316.
- Speaking of Gerry and the place where he lives: The rocking chair man lives in a Hart County neighborhood that has two tennis courts to its credit, so one of the streets in said neighborhood is called Players Lane. Mr. Gerry reported several weeks ago that the Players Lane sign was repeatedly getting picked off. Fifteen times, in fact. Now Hearsay can’t think of a teenage boy in the world who wouldn’t like to have such a sign on the wall in his bedroom, but anyway, after alerting local law enforcement to the sign situation, the stealing has stopped.
- Finally, a famous police report with a Halloween flair: In April ’02, this amazing entry appeared in The Hartwell Sun’s police blotter. The weekly newspaper continues to get calls for copies of it. Here’s yours. “The Hart County Sheriff’s Department responded to a call of two subjects fighting. Upon arrival, the HCSD reported, Pookey was sitting on Boo. Deputies talked with both Boo and Pookey along with Boo’s mother, Boo’s girlfriend, Pookey’s girlfriend and Spook. They stated the following happened: Spook and Boo were fighting. Boo’s girlfriend called his father to come over to break them up. Boo’s mother came, too. They all stated that Pookey pulled Boo off of Spook and Pookey sat on Boo until HCSD got there. When they arrived Pookey was still sitting on Boo and he was told to get off of him and sit in a chair so deputies could talk with all of them. Boo kept laying on the floor and Boo’s girlfriend stated he was having an asthma attack. Boo also stated his arm was broken. EMS was dispatched to the residence to look at Boo. All the subjects at the residence stated that Pookey never hit Boo. He only sat on him to keep him down. Boo kept yelling that he wanted Pookey locked up. Pookey stated that while he was holding Boo down, Boo bit him on the left forearm. Pookey did have a bite mark on his arm. After EMS arrived, Boo left with them to go to Hart County Hospital. Information was taken from Spook about his fight with Boo.”
