STORY TOOLS

Lisa McCann’s voice works like a spiritual antioxidant, purging toxins and restoring the soul.

Her voice also is highly addictive. Within a minute or two of listening, you’re hooked.

Even so, the Anderson-area artist and mother of two is uncomfortable in the spotlight. She doesn’t do concerts. In fact, Lisa McCann doesn’t sing many songs at all.

She sings Scripture.

A native of Boston with an education degree from Southeastern University in Florida, McCann has taken her love for the Bible, combined it with God-given talent and come up with a powerful mix that is one part God’s word and one part good music.

McCann’s first project, a montage about the journey of life and how it intersects with God’s will, was released in March 2005. Since that time, she has produced two additional CDs of Scripture set to music.

The first, simply titled “Scripture,” was released in August 2006. It features McCann’s sing-song voice flowing through Scripture from the New King James version of both Old and New Testaments.

The second CD, titled “Scripture 2,” was released in July. McCann describes it as a musical journey through Scripture, defending the basic ideas of Christianity, including the deity of Christ and the Holy Trinity.

Individual tracks called “Elohim,” “Jesus” and “I am” are tapestries of passages from both testaments, interwoven in a way that is soothing, encouraging and powerful.

McCann’s third CD, currently underway, will be titled “Presence.” A release date has not been set.

But for McCann, who does not have an agent, the music is not the point. For her, the point is walking in obedience to God’s call on her life, and using her musical gift in a way that brings glory to him.

“For me, the point isn’t just about songwriting or creative expression,” she said. “What brings me the most satisfaction is making Scripture accessible to those who might not otherwise embrace it. God’s word is not a book that is beyond our understanding. It is simple, powerful and changes lives.”

She first began putting music to Scripture, she said, “for my children, to help them memorize it. My hope was that doing this would bring peace, conviction, growth, wisdom and hope to our lives.”

It was McCann’s husband, Anthony, who encouraged her to step out in faith and see what might happen.

“He wanted to share some of my songs with other people, and take that step in faith,” she explained. “Without him, these would just be songs I tucked away in my closet or used in my home-schooling.”

Although McCann’s voice has the depth and range of a trained vocalist, she is quick to point out that she is not a seasoned musician.

“I have been singing at churches since I was 14, but I am by no means a professional,” she said, with a modest smile.

Musicians such as Jason Upton, Michael Card, Don Francisco and Anderson’s own Lee McDerment are her inspirations, she said. She’s also grateful for the support of Anderson’s Corner Bagel Shop, where her second CD is sold.

“The owners … graciously offered to sell ‘Scripture 2’ for me,” she said. “This has been a blessing, since we don’t really have an effective avenue in which to sell it.”

McCann also credits a local businessman with loaning her some of the money needed in the expensive production process.

In the end, she is passionate about helping others pursue their calling through a deeper understanding of God’s word. She hopes that her music will inspire others to step out in faith, as she did.

“No matter how big or small you believe your call is, find out what it is and do it,” she advised. “Others may view your calling as insignificant, but finding and doing what God has called us to do gives us contentment — and our contentment in obedience brings God much pleasure.”
