Pendleton-area residents are invited to view “Albanians in Athens — A Positive Picture,” a traveling exhibition of photos taken by Gary Barchfeld. On display will be 14 photos depicting Albanian emigrants involved in programs through PORTA — the Albania House in Athens, directed by Bob and Janice Newell, field personnel with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. PORTA — the Albania House in Athens helps minister to emigrants who fled post-communist, economically unstable Albania to Athens, Greece, in search of a better life. The subjects are shown at work, worship and play, despite the ubiquitous discriminations and prejudices of Greek society.
An award winning photographer, celebrating his 35th anniversary as a commercial photographer, Gary Barchfeld’s work has appeared in countless magazines, brochures and annual reports. He specializes in the commercial arena, with a concentration in the Oil and Gas Industry. His work was featured in Houston’s prestigious FotoFest 2002, displaying a collection of images entitled “Russia in Transition”. Barchfeld traveled three times to Athens, Greece to photograph Albanians.
The exhibit will be on display Sunday through Nov. 9 at First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, 351 S. Broad St., Pendleton. Hours are Sundays 8:30 a.m. to noon, Monday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday 8 a.m. to noon, Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to noon.
