STORY TOOLS

Sept. 16 releases

A rough and tough Al Pacino, Japanimation getting the Wachowski Brothers treatment and a male bridesmaid head up next week’s DVD releases.

In “88 Minutes” (Sony Pictures, $24.99 SRP, R) Al Pacino plays university professor Jack Gramm, who sometimes assists the FBI in forensic psychiatry. His recent testimony against a freshly convicted criminal seems to be the reason he has gotten a scary phone call informing him he will die in 88 minutes. Jack must use his skills in order to track down who has hatched this evil plot and hopefully prevent his own demise. Although it doesn’t tread any new ground (think “DOA”, the classic original and the later remake), it’s still Pacino, baby — and who doesn’t love watching him chew scenery for an hour and a half? “88 Minutes” comes in both full screen and widescreen editions.

Go! Speed Racer! Go! I grew up watching the animated adventures of “Speed Racer” (Warner Home Video, $22.99 SRP, PG), and now, courtesy of those wild and crazy guys behind “The Matrix” series, comes the live action, star studded big screen version. Featuring eye popping visual effects and retaining the campy feel of the original series, “Speed Racer” should appease old and new fans alike. The film stars Emile Hirsch as the titular character, with performances by John Goodman, Matthew Fox and Christina Ricci (yum!). The DVD features include a behind-the-scenes feature, a “how’d they do that” look into the visual effects and cast interviews.

A handsome and successful bachelor is taken aback when his dream girl asks him to be the “maid” of honor in her upcoming wedding in “Made Of Honor” (Sony Pictures, $24.99 SRP, PG-13) starring McDreamy himself, Patrick Dempsey, and Michelle Monaghan. Ok, so I wouldn’t normally recommend a movie like this (I am a guy, after all, and “chick flicks” scare me), but this one has a pretty good buzz around it and was a minor hit earlier this summer in theatres. Plus the trailers are pretty funny. The DVD doesn’t have many special features listed as of press date, just a few trailers and a gag reel.

My “Cult Pick Of The Week” is one of my all-time favorites, newly released in a “Flashback Edition.” The quintessential 1980s high school drama featuring the hottest young stars of the decade, “The Breakfast Club” (Universal Studios, $19.99 SRP, R) is director John Hughes finest work. I’ve been waiting and waiting for this one to get the special edition treatment and there are a few extra features included on the disc: a look back at the film called “Sincerely Yours,” commentary from Judd “The Man” Nelson and Anthony Michael Hall and a fun little feature called “The Most Convenient Definitions.” If you haven’t seen it, then do so. If you have, well, here’s a reason to see it again. “The Breakfast Club” is timeless.

Other notable releases this week include “Chuck: Season 1” (Warner Home Video, $34.99 SRP, Unrated), Matthew Broderick in “Finding Amanda” (Magnolia, $24.99 SRP, R), and special editon DVD’s of the 1980’s classics “Beetlejuice” (Warner Home Video, 14.99 SRP, PG-13), “Weird Science” and “Sixteen Candles” (Universal, $13.99 each, PG-13), and the Deluxe Edition of the Tom Cruise star-making “Risky Business” (Warner Home Video, $14.99 SRP, R).
