Wren coach Jeff Tate confirmed on Wednesday that junior offensive lineman Shaq Anthony has verbally committed to Clemson.

An all-Region 1-AAAA selection, Anthony, who is 6-foot-5, 260 pounds, had an average blocking grade of 91 percent at left tackle.

Anthony chose Clemson over offers from South Carolina, Georgia, East Carolina and Duke. He’s Clemson’s fifth commitment of the 2011 class, and the second in-state commitment after D.W. Daniel defensive lineman Deshaun Williams.

Anthony is the son of former Clemson lineman Vernie Anthony, who lettered in 1981 and ’82.

“I believe his father allowed Shaq to make his decision based on info he gathered at each school that showed interest,” Tate wrote in an e-mail. “He made the announcement at his church and had felt all along that Clemson is where he is supposed to be.”
